												This is not a review of Losing Nelson or England, England, or a record of visits to Chester. As the title claims, it’s a reflection, a few observations on culture and identity seen through Englishness. The trips to Chester are offered by the way, as a start and a finish.I don’t recall the year when my dad’s Electricity Board Sports Club decided on Chester as its destination for the kids’ outing. I do remember many of those annual events vividly, however, perhaps because of the unearthly hour at which we had to set off. Britain had no motorways then and dual carriageways were rare. Roads went through town centres, the concept of the by-pass having just reached the drawing board – at least in the north – and adults could still smoke on the bus, despite the fact that potted meat sandwiches were probably being consumed in the next seat. The sandwich filling has a bearing on the tale, since the price of the trip included a packed lunch, usually passed around in bulk, the sandwiches cut in triangles, not the rectangles of home,  and set in Toblerone ranges on a teacloth-draped tray. Perhaps I was just being greedy, but they did come in handy, if in a rather unexpected way.I can remember visiting Chester’s historic town centre, all those half-timbered buildings provoking discussions about the Tudors, who they were, how they fit into history, who came before and who followed. The predecessors interested all of us on the trip, because we were from Yorkshire and we could never accept that the Lancastrians had won the war. At least we were in Cheshire! And then there were the city’s Roman origins to consider, leading to my learning my first Latin word when we were told that Chester was but a corruption of “castra”, Latin for camp (the military variety).And so to the zoo. Yes, there were real zoos in those days. I was a fan of Zoo Time on  TV, where Dr Desmond Morris, before his higher primate fame, did live experiments with chimpanzees and rewards, all encased in a Prokofiev theme tune. At Chester I remember I liked the sea lions, found the camels oppressively smelly and learnt that elephants really like cold bacon sandwiches.When an infant, I used to wiggle the ridges off my candlewick bedspread. I don’t know whether it was a search for solace in the tactile, but it used to exasperate my mother, because I used to pick things into holes. Charles Cleasby, the Horatio Nelson worshipping main character of Barry Unsworth’s Losing Nelson, often sleeps under a holed and worn blanket of his mother’s whenever he needs reassurance. It’s a covering of peace for him, a way of shutting out the complications of the world and operates physically in the same way that his need to wrap himself in the myth of Nelson protects him mentally. Thus he is perhaps more a worshipper than a scholar. But the myth has become part of his psyche, part of his identity. Nelson’s greatness, Nelson’s genius, are parts of the nation’s greatness and genius and thus, by association, part of Cleasby’s own moral and personal identity. But, wanting to find out more, Cleasby researches Nelson’s history, expecting to confirm greatness and therefore bolster myth. To his increasing dismay and reluctantly admitted disbelief, what he uncovers are the complications of history, the messy realities of war and the personal limitations of the historical figure, who is often revealed as less than competent, certainly less than diplomatic, but also, and more importantly, as a self-seeking, ruthless individual, certainly not a team player. The myth dissolves little by little and so does Charles Cleasby’s hold on reality. As Nelson loses his mythical status, Cleasby’s world simply falls apart. He is no longer able to interpret experience nor relate to his surroundings. The blanket cocoon offered by myth generates an intellectual and mental solace that can both justify and reinforce identity and, once the protecting wrap has been holed for Charles, at least and perhaps for a nation, it is identity itself  that is challenged. Losing Nelson is a serious and moving study of the essential role of myth in defining identity and creating psyche, citing its power and its limitations, these derived from its essence of simply being myth.In England, England, Julian Barnes inhabits similar territory, but humorously. One character lists quintessences (there are more than five) of Englishness and many, perhaps most, are myth, by nature or association. And the purpose of identifying these icons of Englishness is to facilitate the construction, by Sir Jack Pitman on an eventually independent Isle of Wight, of an England Theme Park, packed with imitation and reproduction experience, collected together to take the strain out of tourism. Theme Park England becomes, itself, the quintessence (just one) of corporate identity and presence, with the products on offer being seen and marketed as “better” than the originals. It’s all a great success until, that is, the imitations begin to adopt their assigned identities. Smugglers become a problem when they start smuggling. Dr. Samuel Johnson changes his name to – guess what? – Dr. Samuel Johnson and begins emulating the behaviour of the historical figure, along with a few of his own improvisations for added effect. The King thinks he’s a king and Robin Hood and his Merrie Men yearn to be real outlaws. They are all in breach of contract. Through humour, the book asks questions about what is essential in national personal identity. The project identifies myths and reproduces them as second order experience which themselves become as capable of fulfilling the role of identity creation, definition and perpetuation as the real thing. So, by extension, the book questions how we create, assume and sustain cultures and their associated values.The existence of myth and its potential to influence identity and culture are highly relevant to my second day out in Chester. This time as an adult I revisited the half timbering and Roman roots, the zoo having been transformed by changed notions of the animal. And a new reality asserted itself, redrafting the assumed permanence of my childhood memories. Unbeknown to the child, the half-timbering is largely nineteenth century reproduction and imitation. If it prompts discussion on Tudor England, it does so only by assumed association learned elsewhere. And the extant Roman elements of Chester are miniscule, reduced to a few piles of stone. The town’s official guide book, which I bought to help interpret the visit, pictured a Roman Centurion on its cover. He carried a shield with the words “Tetley Bitterman” emblazoned where one might have expected “SPQR”. At the end of the visit a myth I hade grown up with had been largely exploded. The history, itself, is not the myth. It’s the evidence that’s claimed on its behalf that is the problem. No wonder Sir Jack’s Theme Park attractions were as good as the real thing when the original was originally a theme park. The myth may survive the reality, I suppose, if the individual still wants to believe it. And, by the way, I have never managed to ask elephants if they really do like cold bacon sandwiches.

												By now, almost all Americans understand how common the crime of identity theft has become and should also realize that they are prone to becoming a victim of this horrendous crime.  While most have probably heard of the many problems that can result from identity theft, many may not truly understand what a criminal does with personal information once they have access to it.  Protecting yourself means understanding what a criminal may do once they have your personal information so you can monitor suspicious activity.  Once your personal information has been compromised, thieves can commit many crimes including bank or credit card fraud, utilities fraud, governmental documentation fraud, and even criminal fraud.  This article will discuss the different ways a thief may use your personal identity information and what methods you can use to protect yourself.The most popular and most common way of using someones personal information is bank or credit card fraud and this type of fraud can be very detrimental to the victim.  A thief may get a new credit card using your name and social security number, many times using an alternate address so you never see any bills.  Once the criminal has this credit card they can run up charges until the card is maxed out and never making a payment will put the negative information on your credit history file.  The thief can do a similar thing by opening up a bank account in your name.  They will write bad checks and secure loans with no intention of paying anything back so this will also end up as a negative mark on your credit history file.  Both of these methods may be difficult to catch in the beginning because if the thief is using an alternate address, you will stop receive billing statements from current accounts and never receive a statement on a new account.  There are even some more technologically advanced criminals that can, after gaining access to your pin number, clone your ATM card and drain your bank account dry.Another common activity of identity theft criminals is to commit utilities fraud with your personal information.  A thief may open up new phone, electric, gas, or other utility service account using your information.  This scheme can extend into accounts for cell phones, cable TV, sewer and water, and some criminals have been known to even rent apartments, all in your name, and like bank fraud, the smart criminals will have all bills and statements sent to a different address so you will not be aware of any suspicious activity until after the damage is already done.  This crime be sometimes have less negative impact on the victim because if the criminal is obtaining monthly services using your name, they may very well wish to keep these services active and will actually pay the bills.   But if they dont pay or stop paying later on, then it again goes against your credit history and can affect your ability to obtain and maintain these necessary services.  A more serious type of identity theft activity is government documentation fraud where a criminal can use your personal information for many different purposes.  They may get a drivers license or state ID with your information and their picture.  One common practice of identity theft is the usage of someone elses Social Security number for employment purposes.  While this practice does happen with people who are on the run from the law or wish to stay hidden for some other reason, it is more likely that an illegal immigrant without a Social Security number of their own will commit this crime.  The Social Security administration is not well equipped to detect this type of problem and it may go on for years unless the IRS notices some abnormality at tax time.  Another problem that often arises is when the person using your Social Security number files for unemployment.  There was a case several years ago at a small company where an employee, unknown to the employer, was an illegal immigrant and was using somebody elses Social Security number.  This employee was put on a two week temporary layoff and filed for unemployment with the false Social Security number that they had been using for years.  By a matter of chance, the legal owner of the Social Security number filed for unemployment benefits the very same week which created a red flag for the Social Security administration department.  Possibly the most frightening type of fraud is where a person who has access to your person identity information gets arrested for some reason and supplies the authorities with your information.  If they do immediate jail time, the worst that will happen is that you will develop a criminal history but if they are required to return for a court trial at a later date, you may encounter some real problems.  The fact that they are already a criminal who has stolen your identity means that they are unlikely to bother showing up for their court appointment and a warrant will be issued in your name.  Something as simple as a traffic violation can land you in jail, wondering just what is going on.After learning what an identity theft criminal can do with your information, you should now realize that it is important to take necessary steps to protect yourself.  Instead of taking the chance of becoming a victim, you would be much better off to take some proactive steps to eliminate or reduce your risk of identity theft.

Of course, after a cancer diagnosis there is a lot of work to be done to heal and that can seem overwhelming and terribly discouraging at times. But it is helpful to remember something Confucius said: "A journey of a thousand leagues begins with a single step." In this article, I will offer advice about how to literally take the first step toward healing.   When it comes to physical healing after cancer treatment, your body will do a remarkable job on its own. However, those of us who specialize in rehabilitation medicine, the health specialty most concerned with physical recovery after serious illness or injury, know that there are some specific things people can do to help themselves heal faster and better. One of those things is to start moving your body. That's right, exercise. But not just any exercise -- therapeutic exercise or what rehabilitation specialists call "ther ex."  Therapeutic exercise is designed to specifically combat the effects of serious illness or injury, which leave people weak and tired. For anyone who has been through cancer treatment, a major part of healing involves recovering from the "deconditioning" that occurs due to immobility and sometimes bed rest. One of the most striking effects of bed rest happens at the muscular level. Research has shown that people on bed rest lose 1 percent to 1.5 percent of their strength per day for the first two weeks. For those who have a limb in a cast, the rate of strength loss is higher -- up to 5.5 percent per day. The total loss of strength can be as high as 25 percent to 40 percent for those individuals who are inactive for a period of two weeks or more. Marked losses in muscular strength occur even in those who are not on bed rest but who become sedentary due to a medical condition such as cancer. Losing strength in muscles occurs with no effort and happens extremely quickly. Gaining strength back takes considerable effort and occurs much more slowly.  Strengthening your body and working to build up your stamina will help reduce pain and fatigue and will almost certainly improve your mood. Although I always recommend that people check with their doctors before beginning to exercise, almost anyone (notable exceptions include those individuals with serious heart or lung problems) can safely begin this first step before they consult with their doctor. However, as you progress, be sure to check in with your physician.  The first step is to literally count your steps. I recommend buying a pedometer -- they are inexpensive and can be found at most sporting goods stores and online dealers. Obtain one that specifically counts the number of steps you take daily and record your steps for a week. What is the average number of steps you are taking? Your six-week goal should be 5,000 steps per day. That means that wherever you start off, increase gradually by a few hundred steps per day in order to reach the 5,000 mark. Once you reach the 5,000 steps per day goal, then your next goal is 10,000 steps per day, and you can usually accomplish this over a period of six to 12 weeks. If you start out at around 5,000, then your six-week goal is 10,000 daily steps. Between 5,000 to 10,000 steps per day is a good range for most people.  Using a pedometer is one way to increase your activity level and improve your overall conditioning and endurance. You'll start feeling much better as you are able to increase the number of daily steps you take. However, there is more you can do to help yourself heal. Ideally, you should do a little strength training, too.    People who do some strength training -- whether they use weights, resistance in the water (pool), medicine balls or bands -- work their muscles in a different manner than what can be accomplished by other means such as walking. Strength training is easy to do but if you are new to it, then you should get some professional advice.
